How can I remove lacquer finish from brass kitchen cabinet knobs?

I do not like the shiny brass look. I would like to remove the clear finish, and then use something to "antique" the knobs. They are solid brass.
There are 50 solid brass knobs in the kitchen of the house I just bought. I do not like shiny brass, but I like the knobs. Replacing these expensive knobs would be a bit much.

Answer:
What kind of finish are you trying to achieve? If you are looking for an older, antique look, try doing what the person who had this best answer recommended.

This is an interesting set of instructions for painting brass. I have seen this done using a spray paint of a different metallic finish. Read the comments too...one of those ladies seems to know exactly what she is doing.
