Why are inset doors so much more expensive then standard cabinet doors?
I just ordered new cabinets for my kitchen and was surprised by the mark up when I changed the door style from standard to inset.
Answer: Inset doors need to be manufactured with more precision than overlay doors. They need to fit perfectly within the frame of the door; there is very little margin for error. Overlay doors don't have the same issues; since they cover the cabinet frame they can be a little off in size without it being visible. So you're really paying more for precision sizing, which is labor-intensive.
